The health benefits of blueberries might surprise you. In fact, because of the benefits of blueberries to your health, you’d be wise to eat some blueberries every day. And if those are blueberries that you grew, then all the better!
Those tasty little berries pack a powerful punch when it comes to your health. It’s not a stretch to say that blueberries are one of the healthiest foods on the planet.
Blueberries and Health
Blueberries are loaded with antioxidants, specifically anthocyanadins (these give blueberries their coloring).
They also contain a phytochemical called ellagic acid, which along with the anthocyanadins work to prevent damage to the cells of your body.
And in fact, on a per serving basis, blueberries are loaded with more antioxidants than ANY other fruit or vegetable.
Here are just some of the known health benefits of blueberries:
The “Brain Berry”
That’s what one Tufts university neuroscientist has recently called the blueberry. That’s because research has shown that blueberries can actually reverse memory loss in laboratory tests.
A regular inclusion of blueberries in the diet can lead to improved nighttime vision, a reduced risk of macular degeneration and a reduced risk of developing cataracts.
Consumption of blueberries may lead to a reduced risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar. Eating blueberries can help to naturally reduce your levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol.
Eating blueberries may reduce the risk of certain cancers, including colon and ovarian cancers. In fact, one study found that compounds within blueberries could cause the death of colon cancer cells.
Eliminate Elimination Problems
Blueberries can help in eliminating urinary tract infections. And the fiber that blueberries contain can help with avoiding or reducing problems with constipation and diarrhea.
Worth a Corner of Your Garden?
Numerous studies are underway to learn more about blueberry health benefits. But this much is already established: Blueberries are REALLY good for you. It’s just good fortune that blueberries are also very tasty, and – given the right conditions – very easy to grow.
If you have very limited space for a garden, you probably have to pick and choose the plants that you grow. You might not be able to grow everything that you’d like.
But as you’re planning your garden (or your lawn landscaping), blueberries are certainly worthy of at least making your short list of finalists!
